Is it safe to spay my female dog if she's about to go into heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 5 months old | 60 lbs

Due to covid I had to postpone spaying my dog and she will be fixed in 2 weeks. She started her last heat on the 19th of December and usually has it every 10 months. However 1 out of 5 times she had it after 6 months). Are there any dangers of spaying the female just before a heat cycle? She recently started marking and I noticed that males are more interested in her. Obviously she will not be spayed if she starts the heat before the 16th but I worry if spaying right before has any consequences.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Spaying just before the heat is technically slightly more difficult for the operating vet as the blood vessels and uterus are bigger. however, most of experienced vets can do this surgery comfortably. There are no really any health concerns for the dog. If Masha is already spotting blood and male dogs are showing interest, she will go into full heat very soon, most likely in the next few days. In that case, you should postpone the spay until 2-3 months after the heat.
