When should I take my guinea pig mom and new baby to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 1 month old | 3 lbs

My 4 year old cavy Patches recently had babies. Unfortunately, only 1 of 3 survived, after I performed CPR on all three.  This pregnancy was a surprise to us, and since it was high risk,  I would like to take them to the vet ASAP for wellness check up. It has been 3 days, and baby & mommy have good appetite and bonding very well. I don't want to stress them out by taking them to the vet if it should wait until baby and mommy can better cope. Should I wait a month after nursing or go ASAP?

Hello. I would consider a visit pretty soon, as if there are any issues, the sooner they are addressed the better. Perhaps wait a few more days so that the baby reaches a week of age & then take them in. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
