Why is my tortoise gaping its mouth and making strange throat sounds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Reptile | Tortoise

I have a pet tortoise. I think it is a Mediterannean tortoise. I am not sure if it's male or female, but it might be male. So, it has been opening its mouth up wide and then making weird sound. I did google searches but I couldnt find an accurate answer. The sounds are not squeaking or whispering but more of deep sounds coming from its throat. Id appreciate if you help. Thanks!

The gaping behavior along with the noises may indicate a respiratory infection. This would need to be confirmed by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles. If necessary, antibiotics can be dispensed or administered. In the meantime, confirm and maintain proper environmental parameters. Monitor humidity closely as elevated humidity levels can promote infection.
