My new 4-week-old kittens won't poop or pee after stimulation. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 1 day old | 1lb

Recently adopted two very young feral kittens, took them to the vet today. They are both 4-5 weeks old. Had them both dewormed today just in-case but they have not pooped since we got them more than 24 hours ago. I have tried stimulating them but they did not pee or poop yet. Should I be concerned?

It sounds like you are doing all the right things. But just in case, here is a link to information on how to hand rear orphaned kittens: https://www.2ndchance.info/orphankitten.htm If you are feeding and stimulating them according to these direction and they do not urinate or defecate for another 24 hours then you will need to take them back to the veterinarian.

After you feed them or after they eat, use a moist cotton ball and gently circle their back ends to stimulate urination and defecation. It is possible they are younger than 5 weeks of age if they have not yet begun to eliminate on their own. Typically, the mother would lick their back ends after nursing to stimulate elimination. If you cannot get them to go, then have them physically examined by your veterinarian.
