Guinea pig has soft, strange poop. Is it diarrhea? Call a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | 4 lbs

My guinea pig this morning had some bowel movements that I haven't seen before. It made me concerned and if like to know if it's something serious so I can take him to the vet.

These feces look like semisolid and could be due to a diarrhea episode. Gastrointestinal inflammations/infections are usually the most common cause of it and a reason of extreme concern in guinea pigs. I would recommend an immediate check up to confirm this clinical suspicion and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed. Please post again on the forum if you would like to discuss it further. I hope my answer was helpful.

Thanks for reaching out about Cocoa Marshmallow and including photos. As the guinea pig's gastrointestinal tract in very sensitive, altering the diet, offering fruits or carbohydates, can result in softer stool. But metabolic disorders (liver, kidney), intestinal parasites or infections, endocrine problems and more can also lead to these clinical signs. If the soft stool does not correct in 1-2 days or she becomes lethargic or other signs of illness, a veterinary visit is recommended. Good luck.
