My dog has seizures. What can I do? Are OTC options safe for them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My Jack Russell has had 3 mild seizures is there anything I can buy over the counter to stop these from happening? He was at a vet Monday no heart murmur kidneys and liver are ok. He's raspy sounding when he breaths. A lot of stress around my house.

I am afraid there are no over the counter medicines that would regulate seizures. Actually the most common seizure medication is phenobarbital, which is a controlled drug, but relatively cheap. Keep a diary of the seizure activity, ie time it starts, ends, date and if it lasts 5 minutes or longer then your dog needs to be seen by a vet right away. Stress reduction may reduce seizure activity.
