My dog has a growing bald spot with a scab on her leg. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog has a bald spot on her leg that looked like a scab but has gotten bigger. I cleaned it up and removed the crusty scab. Will this resolve itself? She doesn't lick it or seem to be bothered by it. The attached photo is what it looked like yesterday after i cleaned the scabs off and put some coconut oil on it.

First, I would stop removing the scabs (since they help to protect healing skin) and stop putting coconut oil on (it tastes really good to dogs and it encourages licking). From the picture, it may be a hotspot, but it is hard to tel without seeing it in person. Sometimes these need prescription anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. Your vet may recommend a skin scrape to check for mites.
