My cat's tail is crooked and painful. What should I do if it's broken?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 3 years and 1 month old | 10 lbs

I came home tonight and Sebastian was acting strange. As I was petting him, I noticed a spot at the end of his tail that was wet like he'd been chewing on it, and after a closer inspection, I think his tail might be 'broken'. It isn't noticable by looking, but I can feel that it's crooked, and he twitches it a lot, like he can't get comfortable, and it obviously hurts him to touch it. Can a tail be broken? What should I do? Is there anything that CAN be done? I'm so scared for my sweet boy...

A tail can be broken, indeed and it is very painful. Sometimes a car can drive on a cat's tail, the cat shoots off and pulls the tail so hard it cat get damaged. He could also have had a fight and gotten injured. I suggest you take him to your vet for an exam. The vet may want to do radiographs to see whether there is a fracture, and will also prescribe pain medicine/NSAIDs to relieve inflammation and pain. A broken tail will usually heal by itself over time, but it is a painful injury.
