Is it safe to move my 15-year-old cat to a new home? Will he adjust?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 45 lbs

I have a cat who’s about 14-15, possibly 16 years old. I just moved to Kansas City and for now he’s staying with my parents. I was wondering moving him out to Kansas City where I live would be to much for him. He’s very playful and energetic for his age but also has his senior moments,, on rare occasions. He’s very attached to me when I do go to visit. I’m just worried if I were to move him that he might not take it well and could possibly lead to him passing away or not adjusting well.

If he does seem stressed during the move or in his new environment, you can use products such as Feliway, which can be found at most pet stores or online. Feliway is a product that helps calm cats and supposedly relaxes them and makes them feel less stressed. This, however, depends on the cat as I have had some cats that Feliway does not help with.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He is so adorable!!! Usually cats actually adjust quite well to moves so I would not be concerned about that at all. I think he should be fine. Good luck and have a great day!
