My spayed dog's pee area is red and irritated. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Female | spayed | 7 months and 2 days old | 27 lbs

Ellie was spayed 1 month ago and we noticed a little redness around her pee area the day she came home. Lately, I’ve noticed the red area seeming more irritated as she’s licking it more and it’s getting bigger. What could this be and are there any home remedies or do I need to take her in to the vet?

it is hard to answer this question without seeing what you are referring to. Just based on your description though, I would suggest a vet exam. The number one reason for a dog to lick her vulva that much is a urinary tract infection. That is not something you can treat at home. This is not an emergency. Just get her an exam in the next day or so. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
