Why is my German Shepherd dog losing hair and sore on her ears?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Alsatian | Female | spayed | 8 years and 5 months old | 84 lbs

I have a German Shepherd bitch of 9 years old. She has fur missing at the back of her ears. There seems to be some soreness too.The area of missing fur is about a square inch on each ear.I treat her for fleas ect, monthly with Advantage spot on.I have bathed her ears with dilute Detol and have applied some Sudo cream as advised by a vet.It does not seem to be getting any better.I have owned her for 9 years and always looked after well. Hope you can suggest something.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear Kea is having issues with her ears. There are multiple causes for hair loss on the ear pinna, including hair loss secondary to scratching, skin mites, an infection (bacterial or fungal), or an underlying medical issue (thyroid disease, etc) among others. I would recommend that she be re-evaluated by her veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for her hair loss, have any necessary testing done (skin scrape, skin culture, biopsy, bloodwork) and start any medications she may need to resolve it. Good luck!
