Why is my dog scratching her face? Benadryl helps. Is it allergies?

My dog keeps scratching at her face. She seems to get better with Benadryl. Is this normal for allergies?

Allergies can cause dogs to lick and scratch. She could also have an ear infection in addition to allergies so it would be a good idea to have her examined by a vet to determine the exact cause, especially if there is any discharge in her ear or an abnormal odor. She may need to stay on an anti-histamine long term, especially if it seems to help.
