My dog drank coffee. Is it toxic? What signs should I look for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 30 lbs

My dog , I think she drank some coffee. My sister left a cup on the floor and when my dog came to me her mouth smelled like chocolate so I'm guessing it was coffee because we don't have any candy . Should I be worried ? I'm not sure how much she drank she tried throwing up but she's been acting ok

Coffee is toxic to dogs. If your dog only took a sip of the cup, then she should be ok. If she drank the whole cup there is a problem> Watch for the following signs: Hyperactivity Restlessness Vomiting Elevated heart rate Hypertension (elevated blood pressure) Abnormal heart rhythms Tremors Hyperthermia (elevated body temperature) Seizures Collapse If any of those occur you will need to take Ash to a Pet ER for an exam and supportive care. If in doubt you can also call the pet poison help line: 24/7 Animal Poison Control Center 855-764-7661 $59 USD per incident fee applies
