My dog is on Prozac for aggression. How can I improve his training?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 9 months and 26 days old | 26 lbs

What are the most common behaviour modification things do we need to do when a dog is in Prozac ( flouxetene ) because of previous aggression issues ? I’ve been doing basic commands but my dog is a bit hyper excited , even after 3 weeks of flouxetene he is showing delays in command execusion . Can you advise please ?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It takes 2-4 weeks for Prozac to reach therapeutic blood levels. If at 4 weeks you are noticing minimal affects I would consult your Vet and ask to increase the dose if possible, or change drugs if you are at the maximum dose. You can also add in short acting drugs like Trazadone to use with the Prozac to calm him more during training or specific events where he needs to be calmer. The most important thing for you to do first with Bongo is master the basic commands. I also recommend the gentle leader harness that goes on the muzzle. If you can't get him to learn basic commands and are plateauing with training I recommend a veterinary behaviorist or a trainer specific to your issues. I wish you the best!
