Why does my dog lunge and growl at other dogs on walks and at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 4 years and 9 months old | 60 lbs

I have a 4 year old spayed female lab/pit mix. She has gotten along with different dogs in the past, but when we see someone walking their dog, she freaks out. She will also not get along with one of my dad's dogs, a 1 and a half year old neutered male pit mix. We have tried walking them, having them sniff butts, positive reinforcement, etc but nothing is working! As soon as they each each other, they growl and lunge and try to bite. Please help!

Canine aggression is a complex behavior as it can stem from dominance, possessiveness, fear, anxiety, resource guarding or a combination. Unless you are very familiar with reading canine body language and training, I recommend to work with a professional trainer. Researching on your own will also be helpful. Familiarizing yourself with canine body language and dog training can help you to recognize what your pet is trying to say. You can find many books written on the topic and there is a trainer named Victoria Stilwell who I think is particularly helpful. Also remember that dogs are individuals. Just like you may meet someone you don't like, dogs can be the same. Best of luck.
