Is goat hoof rot contagious? What are alternative treatments?

Hello again, can I please speak to Linda G? I have a question about an answer.. I have 2 other goats and dont have hoof problems.. and you said annabell has hoof rot.. could that be possible beacuse I think its contagious.. and also do you think I could do something else besides soaking her foot? She kicks and wont stand still.. sorry to bother you again. Thanks

Hello. No bother, If this is foot rot it can indeed be contagious. But more than likely there is some underlying issue with Annabelle that allowed this to get out of control. Perhaps something with her immune system. Goats can be pretty antsy when it comes to doing any kind of treatments, but another idea might be to soak a pad of gauze in the solution I mentioned ( & if you have no veterinarian who can supply these to you, you can try using Kopertox ) & wrap the soggy gauze to the bottom of the foot with bandage material. Change this every few days & at each change try to pare away more of the hoof as the tissue softens up. Sometimes adding injectable tetracycline will help. Just use a dose often mentioned on some of the goat sites ( we are not allowed to recommend doses on this site ). Hopefully this will help.
