My 43-day-old kitten isn't gaining weight. Is it time to wean?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Brazilian Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 29 years and 10 months old | 28 lbs

my kitten is 43 days old and stopped gaining weight around 10 days back and is currently 130grams. He used to gain 1-2 grams per day and he has been fed with proper pet milk since 10 days old when his mom refused them on the street. He is pretty strong and healty, drinks milk every 2 hours and always wants more, urine and feces ok too, but never gains weight. His head, ears and paw are getting bigger but not his body. Here the vet could not help since he has not enough weight to do any exams

At 43 days of age, it's time for Tarcisio to be weaned off milk. Milk won't be enough at this point to meet his nutritional needs, so that may be why he's not gaining weight. To help him wean and to get used to dry food, I would soak a high quality kitten formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with kitten formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry kitten food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until he is eating the dry kitten food only.
