Why is my dog scratching so much even with flea meds? More baths?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Male | neutered | 7 months and 9 days old | 28 lbs

My pups are inside dogs but they do go outside five days a week for 4-9 hours a day. They usually get a full grooming done at the beginning of the month and a bath at home towards the end of the month. They aren’t dirty dogs but I am noticing that they are scratching a lot and trying to clean themselves. They are also on flea meds. Should I give them a bath maybe 3 times a month?

If you’re going to bathe the dogs more frequently, you will need to use a soap or shampoo that does not strip any topical flea prevention. Another good option is to put them on one of the oral flea prevention’s since those are the top products on the market. They are not affected by bathing. Ask your veterinarian about products such as Nexgard or Simparica. Certainly you can try increased bathing to see if that helps them itch less. The itching could also be related to fleas or allergies. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
