My cat strains to poop, passes mucus. What's causing this problem?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 4 years and 3 months old | 23 lbs

My cat has been having this ongoing issue of straining while trying to poop. Sometimes nothing comes out and sometimes a mucous gel substance comes out. Eventually poop does come out.

I'm sorry that Leo is having this problem. If Leo is having some mild constipation, it is common that we will see a small amount of mucous come out when he does pass stool. This is due to some irritation of the colon and is normal with mild constipation. However, the goal is to resolve the mild constipation so he does not continue to have this problem. I am attaching a link to a handout with more information about constipation below. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=634 There are a number of treatment options that you can try including a diet change or adding some additional fiber to his diet which may help him pass stool normally, so I would recommend talking to your veterinarian about those options. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
