My cat has a bare patch on his leg. Should I be worried or see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 8 months old

My cat has a bare patch the size of a £2 coin on the back of his leg. It doesn't look sore and he isn't over-washing it - do I need to do anything about it, or is it best left alone?

Although a pciture of it could help to determine the underlying cause, this presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics or antifungal meds (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking.
