My cat had a seizure. What should I do and when should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 years and 6 months old

Dessie is a foster cat I've had for about 1 1/2 months. When she came the previous owners said she had had two seizures several months ago. I think she had another seizure today: I found feces on the rug and she had drooled on herself. I called the hospital immediately and they said to watch her and bring her in if she had another. My question is where do we go from here? Should i make an appointment to follow up with a vet or just remain vigilant?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Seizures can occur due to many reasons that go from a toxicity, metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases and even tumors. I highly recommend that you have Dessie evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Diagnostics that will be recommended will include bloodwork and advanced imaging such as an MRI. They would also be able to start her on anti-seizure medications to try to avoid the onset of more seizures. Usually anti-seizure medications are prescribed when 2 o more seizures occur in 1 month. Good luck and have a good day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
