Why is my older dog breathing fast while sleeping? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Setter | Male | neutered | 10 years old | 75 lbs

Hi, the dog I’m babysitting is breathing very fast, he’s a 10 year old English setter, he’s breathing about 66-68 breaths per minute while sleeping. Besides that he doesn’t seem to be in pain or uncomfortable.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. That is a bit fast. Check his gum color. They should be a nice pink (like your own gums). If they are any color other than that, you need to take Cody to the emergency vet clinic. You also need to see the emergency vet if Cody has any history of a heart murmur, is not eating, seems lethargic or weak, or seems to be working hard to breathe when he is awake. Otherwise, get in touch with the owner and see about scheduling Cody for the first available appointment at his regular vet. Best of luck to you and Cody!
