My two healthy dogs died suddenly. Was it choking or something else?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 13 years and 5 months old | 15 lbs

Two of my big dogs have died for the same reason in a matter of months. They were perfectly healthy and supposedly died by choking on dog food. Any idea what the actual cause might have been?

I'm very sorry to hear that! Unfortunately, there are many different things that can cause sudden death in dogs - choking is one possibility, as well as a sudden stroke or cardiac arrhythmia, toxin ingestion, internal bleeding, etc. The only way to know for sure would be to have an autopsy done (called a necropsy in animals). Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.
