Why is my 4-month-old puppy scratching? Is it fleas or dry skin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 22 days old

I used a flea kit when my lab/beagle mix was 10 weeks old. I visited my vet two weeks later to be up to date and they gave him a med for heart worms and I was told it would protect him from fleas and ticks as well. My pup is now 4 months old and has started scratching again.I have combed his hair and checked his ears looking for ticks or fleas but haven’t seen any. Could he have fleas or could it be dry skin? He doesn’t go to public places and only uses my yard for bathroom and play on a leash.

Itching/scratching can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. I recommend making an appointment to have Ryder seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the itching you’ve noticed and to make sure it is treated appropriately. The vet may want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment. In the meantime, you can bathe Ryder in hypoallergenic shampoo for dogs to clean the area, but this will likely not resolve the itching.
