Is it allergies or bug bites if my dog is itchy with red bumps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 35 lbs

Hi, my dog is on and up to date with Bravecto and Interceptor plus. I find her licking her paws and vagina area. And just overall seems itchier than usual. But nothing serious. I found some red bump and am wondering if it’s allergies or some type of bug bite. Thank you for your help.

Hello. This very well could be some kind of sensitivity or allergy to something & this is the time of year that allergies are rampant. You can try bathing her in cool water using an oatmeal based shampoo, or using one with 1% hydrocortisone or Pramoxine. The key is to let her sit in the lather for 10 minutes before rinsing. Bathing can be done 2-3 times a week to keep her comfortable. These all have mild itch control. If the skin irritations persist, please see your vet to make sure Kona is not developing any type of skin problem & if some of the newer allergy medications like Apoquel & Cytopoint might be beneficial to her. If his skin is itchy with red bumps, it may be an allergy or something like mites or fleas. You can start by bathing him in a hypoallergenic shampoo. If it continues or worsens, I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian as these bumps can also be a sign of bacterial or yeast infections in the skin. It may also be helpful to ask another question on the forum and attach pictures of the bumps and lumps.
