Is it normal for my dog's penis to get stuck after humping and hurt?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 2 years old | 19 lbs

Hello, My name is Christina and I kind of have a awkward question about my dog Ernie. Every time he humps his stuffed animal he gets stuck with his male part out of his body for about 20 minutes or longer it seems. When it finally goes back in he screams in pain and it really scares me. He went to the vet and they found nothing wrong, but I’ve had male dogs before and they never did this. Is this normal for some male dogs? Thanks, Stina

YEs, this can happen especially if the opening in the prepuce is very small. I would recommend neutering him unless you specifically want to breed from him in the near future as there is a risk of permanent, irreversible damage should the penis become stuck out for an extended length of time
