My neutered cat is scratching a raw rash on his neck. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 5 months and 7 days old | 12 lbs

My cat peanut was neutered yesterday & today I noticed he has a rash or maybe scratched too hard under his neck. He will not stop scratching. What can I do? It looks pretty raw. Thank you in advance for your help.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Peanut. Poor boy. It looks like it could be a wound. I would gently clean it with warm water and antiseptic soap. To prevent him from scratching at it, I would put a t-shirt or a baby onsie on him to protect it. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!
