My dog has allergies and dry skin. What should I use to bathe her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 75 lbs

My blue Pitbull is allergic to many things outside so she’s constantly breaking out in hives. And she has dry skin, I’ve been using an oatmeal based shampoo for her but she still has dry skin. What should I use to bathe her?

I would try to add in some fish oil or omega 3 fatty acids to her diet to help moisturize her skin from the inside out. I would also put her on a regular regimen of an allergy medicine. You can start with trying benadryl twice a day. See links below. I think the oatmeal shampoo is good but I wouldn't bathe her any more than every 7-14 days. If this doesn't help, I would strongly recommend to have her seen by your vet. Your vet will be able to put her on a stronger allergy medicine if needed and oral antibiotics if needed. Unfortunately, allergies can't be cured but you have to figure out the best way to maintain her. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon! https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/# https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetri-science-laboratories-omega-3-6-9-dog-and-cat-gel-caps
