My cats suddenly started fighting and won't stop. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 5 years and 10 months old | 16 lbs

I have two cats that I have had for 5 and 6 years. Yesterday I think that one got his claw stuck on a boot and went to run away and it followed him. I think he associated it with the other cat. They started hissing and growling at each other like I’ve never heard them before. They can’t even be in eyesight of each other. I am not sure what to do. They are both neutered.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! For now, I would recommend that you just give them some time. They will likely forget what happened and continue to live as they did before. Try to keep them separate if possible for at least a few days. You can try a product called Feliway to try to reduce any anxiety that may be present. Best of luck!
