my 10 year old cat as a known flea allergy. it's summer here in New Zealand. I dosed her just before christmas - went away - came back to highly stressed cat - crawling with fleas. vet I took her to said she now has a food allergy as well - to beef and fish. he wants to sell me very expensive food. contacted her normal food company (Purina) - who said, all Friskies range contains beef (and/or fish) but some of their One range - only contains beef FAT - no proteins - no allergic reaction

If Mischief is crawling with fleas I recommend resolving that issue and working on environmental clean up over the next 2 months first. Capstar is generally available over the counter and works to kill fleas within 30 min. In addition Mischief should be on a monthly flea preventative such as Revolution which works better than many over the counter products. It is important to keep Mischief on a monthly preventative year round or at least for the next 3-4 months to break the flea life cycle and the fleas on her now are laying eggs that may hatch next month and re-infect her if she is not continuously protected. It is important as well to vacuum the home daily/launder any sheets/bedding etc. that she may have come in contact with as flea eggs can be laid/dropped all over the home and re-infect her after they hatch. Food allergies are less common in cats than dogs, I would say that if she has fleas on her now, the primary issue is fleas and you can address possibly changing her diet after the flea infestation has resolved and you are no longer seeing flea dirt in her coat (usually near the rump) on daily flea combing. Hopefully you and your family memebers do not get bitten by fleas as sometimes happens! Good luck!
