Why is my dog drinking and peeing a lot, and having accidents?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 6 years and 9 months old | 26 lbs

Angus has had to urinate more frequently and had a major accident after 4.5 hr left alone. He has been drinking more. I took him off some of his supplements and treats and he seems to be better. Any other suggestions?

Hi there. There are a number of different medical conditions that can cause an increase in drinking and urination in a middle-aged dog like this, so I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam as the first step. Some common possible causes would include diabetes, Cushing's disease, or chronic kidney disease. Your veterinarian can do some simple blood and urine tests to check for these problems, and will get him started on appropriate treatment depending on what is found.
