My spayed cat is in heat. Is it ovarian remnant or ectopic tissue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 2 years old

My cat was spade 4 months ago and she is back in heat, my vet has agreed this is the case. And they want to operate on her. They have said they will cover the cost if it is remnant but not if it’s ectopic tissue. How do I tell the difference between the two? And how do I know if they are telling the truth/ make sure they don’t say it’s ectopic tissue just to make me pay? What is the likely hood of it being ectopic tissue?

You should ask about a biopsy but the tissue would be ovarian tissue regardless of whether it is a remnant or ectopic tissue. The difference is the location of the tissue, and there would not be a way for you to know for certain. If you feel like you don’t trust your vet you might want to go elsewhere for surgery. An ovarian remnant is more common than ectopic tissue but I don’t think we know the incidence for certain.
