Why is my dog reverse sneezing frequently? Should I be concerned?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 7 months and 24 days old | 18.8 lbs

Should I be concerned that Pepe is reverse sneezing several times a day. They are usually 5-20 seconds long. I am use to them due to fostering rescue Pugs in the past. Pepe is almost 8 moths old and does not have a flat snout.

Thank you for your question regarding Pepe. Reverse sneezing can be a sign of an upper respiratory infection. I would have him evaluated by a veterinarian to see if this is the case or of he requires medication. He could also be reverse sneezing due to allergies. Finally, some small dogs will reverse sneeze upon excitement or if something irritates the nose or back of the throat (ie water in the bath). In the meantime, encourage him to eat and drink. I hope this information helps!
