My cat poops next to the litter box after neutering. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 11 months and 29 days old

My male cat was about 5 months old when we got him. (he's almost 1 now, but a rough guess) He used to use the litter box fine every time. Ever since he's been desexed he poos on the floor next to his litter box. Nothing's changed, it's always cleaned, etc. He knows he's done wrong Cos he bolts as soon as he knows I found it. I am so over cleaning cat poo off the floor.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Some cats like to have 1 litter for pee and 1 for poop. Try getting a 2nd litter box, and clean it twice daily. If that doesn't work then check is poop for worms. You can also try getting a different litter type, he might just not like the type of litter for pooping. Best of luck with Silas!
