Pet's info: Dog | Puggle | Male | neutered | 8 years and 6 months old | 27 lbs
My dog is unusually waking up twice at night having to go outside desperately. I hear gas and this morning he had a looser than normal stool and some liquidy stuff at the end. He never gets us up at night. Please advise.

Poor guy. It sounds like Sonny has a bad case of colitis (inflamed colon). This can be caused by stress, eating something that didn't agree with his stomach, intestinal parasites, malabsorption, or an internal organ malfunction. Typically we try a short course of antibiotics, probiotics and a bland diet to see if the symptoms resolve. You can try probiotics over the counter for now and a bland diet to see if there is any improvement. Culturelle over the counter and a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese can be tried. Also you can add 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in his food daily to add fiber and help bulk up his stools. If there is no improvement within 1-2 days, then its best to take Sonny to your local vet for a fecal exam to check for parasites and antibiotics to resolve the inflammation. I hope that Sonny's stools normalize soon! Best wishes and take care.
