My dog took too much doxycycline for heartworm. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | 2 years and 11 months old | 40 lbs

My dog is being treated with doxacycline for heart worm 1st stage. 2x2 every day. He absolutely hates it though, vomited a few times because of it. Today we were fighting to get him to swallow it again with food and I mistakenly thought he spat the two pills, so I gave him 2 more. Later I see he swallowed one and spat one out, so now he is on 3. Do I have a reason to worry? He seems fine your and a half later but still... should I skip tomorrow morning? Thank you.

Do not skip tomorrow morning's dose. Just keep on as prescribed. There should be no problem with a one time extra tablet. Unfortunately the vomiting could happen more often, as doxycycline often causes nausea as a side effect.
