How to train your dog to go to their bed on command at night?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Male | neutered | 3 years and 7 months old | 23 lbs

I'm trying to train my dog to go to his bed when I say "bed", instead of sleeping in my bed because he can't get up and down on his own and he wakes me up in the middle of the night whining to get down. I've already started saying "bed" and pointing to his bed, and I'll pick him up and put him in it while saying "bed". I give him treats when he goes on his own, so he knows it's good. What else should I be doing?

Try looking up "train your dog to place" on google - instead of "place" you can say "bed." There are lots of good resources. You will need to work on training several times per day for a few minutes each time. Clicker training may also help him get it a little quicker. Stay consistent. It may take several weeks of working on this skill for him to do it without a treat. Even then he may still decide your bed is more comfortable. Alternatively, you can crate train him and put his bed in there for nighttime.
