Why is my cat peeing tiny amounts frequently but acting normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years and 1 month old | 10 lbs

My male cat has been going to the box every few minutes but one pees about a pea sized amount each time. He doesn’t cry when he pees and is acting completely normal other than his peeing habits. Should I be concerned?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The urinary tract symptoms you describe could be due to a urinary tract infection, feline lower urinary tract disease, urinary stones, a tumor, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Simba evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further diagnostics would include abdominal imaging and lab work. Treatment would be based on findings. This would become an emergency if all of a sudden he is unable to pass any urine. In that case, have him evaluated as soon as possible. Good luck and have a good night!

According to your description it does not sound like a blockage, or at least not like a complete blockage, it's more likely to be FLUTD indeed or it could also be a urinary infection. i would recommend taking him to the vet ASAP in order to get it treated as these 2 conditions can escalate very quickly to a urinary blockage in male cats.
