My dog cut her lip chewing. How to treat it and stop licking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Female | spayed | 3 years and 3 months old | 80 lbs

Rayne chewed a plastic food bowl and cut her upper lip. She licks everything. What can I put on this? It almost seems her lip is cracking. Threw bowl away. Thanks

A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to speed up healing process and avoid possible infection. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (apply it and then rinse it carefully). Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching.
