Dog shaking head violently, ears irritated. What should I do next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 60 lbs

Hi there, my dog has started violently shaking her head. We don't see redness in the ears, but it's obviously something to do with her ears. It started about two days ago, and the last bath we gave her was exactly week ago, so I can't tell if we got water in her ears. We used a solution of Hydrogen Peroxide and water to clean her ears, with cotton balls, last night and this morning. Last night it got really bad, but she's still obviously irritated. Is there something else we should try?

I recommend having a veterinarian take a look in her ears with an otoscope. When I see dogs this uncomfortable without a lot of debris and inflammation suggesting an infection, I worry that there is something deep in the ear canal near the ear drum. If your veterinarian doesn't see anything in there, it could just be itchiness from allergies, and they can give you a prescription strength ear wash or other allergy medication. Until someone rules it out, I would be suspicious that there is more going on. I hope Daisy feels better soon.
