My puppies have flaky bald spots on their heads. How to treat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 3 months old | 22 lbs

My dog had her 2nd litter of puppies 3 weeks ago. 10 puppies. (Her 1st was 9. No more!) 1 puppy had a bald spot on his head about a week ago with little flaky skin. The hair grew back but still flaky. Now today I see 3 more with same signs. All on head. How can I safely treat this with their age? I am in Hawaii, mold, mites, fungus, everything goes crazy here. HELP! I'm working and in full time school... I want the best and I dont know what to do. Thank you!

Hi, and thanks for your question. This presentation is likely to be due to a localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal). A check up at your local vet, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics or antifungal meds (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths.
