My cat's milk is coming in. Does my kitten still need bottle feeding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 7 days old | 0 lbs

My cat had kittens and only one made it. I took them to the vet yesterday. They said the mother cat was not producing enough milk. they gave me formula and bottle to feed baby every two hours. Kitten does not want the formula and cries, does not like the bottle. I tried every 2 hours all night, squeezing the milk in its mouth to make sure she got some. I put baby back with mom. Noticed milk coming out of moms nipple when I gently squeeze. Is her milk coming in? Do I still need to bottle feed?

The momma cat might not be making enough milk even though you can see some. It can take little kittens some time to get used to a bottle. You could ask your vet for a tutorial on how to safely offer formula via a syringe or ask about tube feeding to make sure the kitten is getting enough nutrition. As long as your vet confirmed that mom is healthy it is probably okay to let the kitten nurse some. These nipples in my opinion make a big difference too: https://www.miraclenurser.com
