My senior cat is snoring loudly. Should I take her to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

My 12 year old, DLH just started snoring (kinda loud) a couple weeks ago. She seems 100% fine otherwise. Eats like a horse (but has always been thin), plays, acts totally normal, she was breathing louder awake on occasion kind of grunting for a couple days but hasn’t in over a week. I’m wondering if I need to take her in. She gets EXCEEDINGLY traumatized leaving the house and going to vet, so I want to spare her that if I can, but I don’t want to not take her if she needs it. Very torn...

Snoring is not typical behavior for cats and I think you need to see a vet if it starts again. If you have not heard any snoring in a week there might not be cause for concern. I would worry about nasal congestion, a polyp or a tumor obstructing the nose. If your kitty is very stressed by car rides you could see if there are any mobile veterinarians in your area or you could ask your vet about an oral sedative to try for her visit.
