Dog ear hematoma: Is it an emergency? What about pain relief?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog has developed an outer ear hematoma. I noticed it a couple of hrs ago. My question is , can this issue be addressed Monday morning when his vet is opened or do you recommend getting it treated now at an emergency vet ? Also do you know if any vet takes payment plans ? Is this painful ? And if it is what can I give him to ease the pain?

You can wait until Monday to get this treated. I recommend using a cone so he doesn’t scratch at the ear making the hematoma larger. They will examine his ears too since often these develop because of ear infections. I don’t recommend giving any over the counter pain medication, if they feel he’s in pain they will prescribe medication. Check with your veterinarian specifically about a payment plan. We take Care Credit which is a medical credit card that you can apply for at home. That will let you charge his medical bills and pay over time.
