Why does my 2-month-old kitten have a swollen lip with sticky mucous?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 18 days old | 0.8 lbs

Hi, my cat is around 2 month, not vaccinated. I notice swilling in his left lip with sticky mucous on mouth since 2 dyes. He don't open mouth, eat well. Last visit to pet clinic last week said his weight was normal. His spilling has ear mite and they treated.

I am sorry to hear about your kitten! I would recommend getting him to a vet as soon as possible if he is having trouble eating. He could have an infection of the lip here, or it looks like what we call a "rodent ulcer" which is a granulomatous reaction of the immune system https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951528 . Either way, he needs veterinary care for this issue.

I would recommend that you have the kitten re-examined by the vet. A swelling could be trauma from excess play, infection, or an autoimmune disorder. If he can't open his mouth to eat due to pain or broken bones, this is a very serious issue. You may want to weight the other kittens to be able to compare weights, though Smoky may just be smaller than the others and still be completely healthy .
