Why is my parrotlet losing feathers and bathing in his water?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parrot | Male

My parrotlet keeps putting the water in his dish between his wings. He is constantly doing that and I have added a second one so he isnt drinking dirty water. I have tried to get him in his bird bath and he pefers his water dish and won’t even go near it. Between his wings he has no feathers, its a small patch of skin but you cant see it unless he opens them. Also, on his head he has lost some feathers. Other then that nothing is unusual with him. Is he just molting or could it be somthing else?

He does look like he may be molting as there appear to be pin feathers (new feathers that are pin-like) growing on his head. These feathers replace the old when a bird goes through a molt, and if he's otherwise normal and healthy I wouldn't be too concerned unless he becomes itchy, the feathers don't grow back in, or there is redness or irritation of the exposed skin. As for the water dish, some birds do prefer different types of dishes to bathe in. You can try offering a different type of bird bath to see if he enjoys that, or even change his drinking water bowl to a different type and keep the other as his bath.
