My dog has red, pus-filled spots on her chin. What should I do?

Hi, my 11 month old dog has quite large red spots on her chin that sometimes look like they’re filled with pus. She’s had these for as long as I can remember and they used to clear up on their own but now it only seems to be getting worse. She’s not in any pain with them but what can I do to help clear them up? Thanks.

This looks like chin acne. It’s common in dogs and cats. Some animals develop this from an allergy to plastic dog bowls. I recommend feeding from a metal bowl or ceramic one. You can cleanse the area twice daily after eating with an antibacterial or acne pad. Usually that will help remove the skin bacteria and reduce the moisture so the skin can heal. This is nothing to be overly concerned about unless it worsens. Then I would give a course of antibiotics. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Tova.
