Don't ever feel embarrassed to ask for help! I'm a vet, and I still ask my colleagues questions about things of which I'm not sure. This is quite a dangerous thing to do because cats are exquisitely sensitive to flea medications, and you could accidentally overdose one causing a toxic reaction. That would require an emergency vet visit, as I'm sure you are aware. I really recommend you don't do this, it would cost a lot more to hospitalize and treat a cat with flea medication toxicity than to pay a bit extra to get your cats the correct flea medication. I hope this helps.
