My dog has a fatty tumor not bothering her. Is surgery necessary?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 7 years and 7 months old | 63 lbs

My female pitbull has what my vet called a fatty tumor on her knee cap. He said removing it would only be for me and its not bothering her. It has grown over the years it's the size of maybe half a ping pong ball, although for the past couple of years its remained the same size. I would rather not put her through unnecessary surgery to have it removed he also said another could develop. What are your thoughts on this please. And she is 7 if that matters. Also she doesnt ever seemed bothered by

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the growth is slow growing and your Vet is confident it is a lipoma (benign fatty tumor) then you do not need to remove it. You could always have your vet do an aspirate of the growth and send it out to the lab to have a pathologist look at it under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis. But I think it if is slow growing, isn't bothering Gemma and it is a lipoma then you do not need to remove it. I hope this helps
