My cat won't let me trim her nails. Are scratching posts enough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Snowshoe | Female | spayed | 9 years and 8 months old | 11 lbs

My cat is new to me but 9 years old. I have no idea about her former care but she won’t let me trim her claws. She uses a scratching post nicely. Is that enough or should I force the claw trimming?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I personally do not clip my cats nails. She too does not allow it but loves her scratching post. If they get too long, you can always ask your vet for a mild sedative (I use gabapentin) which may make nail trimming possible. Otherwise, you can take her in to your vet or groomer a few times yearly. Best wishes to you and Aggie!
